The Zany Umbrella Circus, "Tinker"



The umbrella bicycle in action. The rear wheel is raised an inch or two off the
ground, making it essentially an exercise cycle. As Ben squeezes the
handlebars together, the umbrella splits into two flapping wings.

My inspiration, one of a series of "concept" sketches by artist Alberto Almarza.
When I first saw it, the shape of the "bat" wings brought to mind
the bottom edge of an umbrella. An idea was born.




Our scale working drawing, from which Dave and I constructed the steel "skeleton."
